How to Care for Sandals with Metal Details

Metal chains, buckles and other decorative details can make a simple pair of sandals feel more polished. However, these elements may lose their finish, collect residue or damage the surrounding material when cleaned incorrectly.

A careful routine can help preserve both the decoration and the sandal itself.

Check Every Material First

Embellished sandals often combine several materials, such as:

  • Metal or coated decorative hardware
  • PU, microfiber or leather uppers
  • Padded footbeds
  • Rubber or TPR outsoles
  • Adhesives holding the components together

A cleaning method that works on the outsole may damage the upper or metal finish. Check the product’s care information before applying any cleaner.

When testing a new product, use a small amount on a concealed area first.

Remove Dust with a Dry Cloth

Use a soft, dry cloth to remove dust from the straps and decorative details. A small, soft brush can help clean narrow spaces between chain links or around buckles.

Avoid stiff brushes and abrasive cloths. These may scratch polished hardware or wear away a decorative coating.

Cleaning away dry debris first also prevents it from spreading when moisture is introduced.

Wipe Metal Details Gently

Lightly dampen a soft cloth and wipe the metal decoration without soaking it. Dry the area immediately with a separate clean cloth.

Do not use metal polish unless the sandal manufacturer specifically recommends it. Fashion hardware may be plated, painted or coated rather than made from solid metal. A strong polish could remove or discolor its finish.

Avoid household bleach, alcohol and abrasive cleaners for the same reason.

Protect the Surrounding Upper

Cleaning products should not be allowed to collect around the points where chains, buckles or decorations connect to the upper.

Too much moisture may affect:

  • The color or texture of the strap
  • Adhesives beneath the decoration
  • Stitching around the attachment points
  • Coatings on synthetic materials

For PU or microfiber uppers, a soft, slightly damp cloth is usually safer than soaking or scrubbing. Always follow any material-specific instructions provided with the sandals.

Keep Sandals Away from Water

Decorative sandals should not automatically be treated as waterproof, even when they are designed for summer.

Pool water, salt water and prolonged exposure to rain may affect the metal finish, upper material or adhesives. If the sandals become wet, blot away excess moisture and allow them to dry naturally in a ventilated area.

Keep them away from hair dryers, radiators and prolonged direct sunlight. Concentrated heat can change the shape or finish of several materials.

Avoid Contact with Cosmetics

Sunscreen, body lotion, perfume and other cosmetic products may leave residue on both the straps and metal details.

Allow skincare products to absorb before putting on your sandals. If residue appears, wipe it away promptly with a soft cloth instead of allowing it to build up around the decoration.

Do not spray perfume or other products directly onto the shoes.

Store Them Without Pressure

Metal chains and decorations can leave marks when pressed against soft uppers or footbeds.

Before storing your sandals:

  1. Make sure they are clean and completely dry.
  2. Place them flat in a cool, dry area.
  3. Keep heavy shoes from resting on top of them.
  4. Separate decorated pairs with soft tissue or a breathable shoe bag.
  5. Avoid bending or pulling the chain details.

Do not store damp sandals in sealed plastic bags, as trapped moisture may affect both the hardware and the surrounding materials.

Inspect the Attachments Regularly

Check the points where decorative pieces connect to the sandal. Stop wearing the pair if you notice a loose chain, sharp edge or damaged fastening that could catch on clothing or scratch the skin.

Do not pull or twist a loose decoration back into position. A shoe repair professional may be able to secure it without causing further damage to the upper.

Preserve the Details with Gentle Care

Sandals with metal decorations do not require complicated maintenance. The most important steps are removing dust regularly, limiting moisture and avoiding harsh cleaning products.

Gentle handling will help protect the chain or buckle while also preserving the straps, footbed and finish surrounding it.
